Nena Saviya - Cause-01

calendar_month
September, 2018

The very first project under “Nena Saviya” scholarships programme was introduced in September 2018 which was designed to support 10 (ten) school children to enhance their dependency and motivate them to proceed with their education.
The beneficiaries of this project were identified and selected with the assistance of the parish priest of Methodist Church, Hiniduma in Galle District.

Initially 10 children were selected in the age group of 10 to 17 and all were attending school, and of low-income families, living at “Neluwa” and “Thawalama” villages in Hiniduma Divisional Secretariat in Galle District. Some of their parents were coolies of tea estates in Neluwa, Thawalama and Udugama area.

After the selection we had two meetings with the children together with their parents and we were made to understand that these children badly needed some financial support for their education. The total monthly commitment to 10 children was Rs.14,000/-. (Rs.1,000 to 3,000)

We contacted the branch Managers of Bank of Ceylon and People’s Bank of these areas and accounts were opened in their names and requested to allow them to withdraw the money when and where necessary as these scholarships were given for their education.

Under this programme Rs.56,000/- has been granted to them in the year 2018. In year 2019 too, a sum of Rs.28,000/- was granted. Total of scholarships granted was Rs.84,000/-
